Oscar Alvarenga, Jr.

4-Year College or University Scholarship

Oscar Alvarenga, Jr. will be attending Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this Fall, majoring in Psychology. Oscar Jr. is not only a very motivated and successful student, but he is very committed to helping his community. He has volunteered at the Montgomery County Public School Summer school programs over the years.  He also volunteers at Epworth United Methodist Church Food Distribution program since its inception in March of 2020. During the beginning of the Covid-19 shut down, Oscar Jr. volunteered to be outside of the church greeting people in the parking lot to help them get their food. That was during the time that most people were afraid to be around people outside of their family. Also, during this period, he was instrumental in bringing Epworth United Methodist Church online for services. He was responsible for the audio-visual for services for several months. This dedication demonstrates his commitment to help others in need.

Oscar Jr. is also a member of the Marching Band at Gaithersburg High School and will also be part of the Marching Band at Temple University.  This young man is smart, kind, hard-working, community focused and looking to the future. He envisions himself working with low-income communities as a psychologist. I believe that Oscar Jr. will accomplish his goal and help to make this world a better place.

Magaly Hernandez

Montgomery College Scholarship

Magaly Hernandez is our Montgomery College Scholarship awardee this year. Magaly is interested in the Nursing Program at Montgomery College. Becoming a nurse has been a lifelong dream and professional goal. Magaly is a member of Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) a collaborative effort with MCPS, Montgomery College, and the Universities as Shady Grove to support students in their effort to earn a bachelor’s degree. She is also a member and ambassador of HOBY Leadership Program in Maryland, a program that is dedicated to inspiring people to live a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.

While attending Gaithersburg High School Magaly had the opportunity to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and she happily completed this certification through Montgomery College, Takoma Park Campus. She was able to work with senior citizens and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities she was given. With such an impressive and substantial foundation, I believe that Magaly will achieve her goal of becoming a nurse. Magaly is not only a very intelligent young woman, but she is also thoughtful and caring and I know that she is destined to do great things.
